A joke about vegetables has made it to the top of the menu as this year’s funniest at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Swedish comedian Olaf Falafel has won Dave’s “Funniest Joke of The Fringe” award with a niche culinary pun.

He took the title with the gag: “I keep randomly shouting out ‘Broccoli’ and ‘Cauliflower’ – I think I might have florets”.

It is from Falafel’s show It’s One Giant Leek For Mankind at the Pear Tree.

In its 12th year, the prize rewards the funniest one-liner to grace the venues of the festival and celebrates the pool of talent the Fringe has to offer.

The goal of finding the wittiest one-liners fell to an expert panel of 10 judges, comprising the UK’s leading comedy critics.

Vegetable Joke Gets Daily Wire President A Twitter Suspension

Jeremy Boreing, president of the Daily Wire and business partner of Ben Shapiro, was suspended from Twitter over a joke about Brussels sprouts.

The incident occurred when Boreing tweeted about fellow Daily Wire reporter Emily Zanotti’s recipe for Brussels sprouts.

Boreing apparently has a severe disdain for Brussels sprouts. In what was meant as a light-hearted nod to his distaste for the cruciferous vegetable, Boreing joked, “Even better, coat with melted butter, salt, pepper, paprika, and a dash of Worcestershire, sear in cast iron in bacon grease for thirty seconds or until brown, then throw them away and burn your face off with the hot pan because even that would be better than Brussels sprouts.”

Twitter unfortunately was not feeling the humor in the statement and suspended Boreing for violence, saying that he had “encouraged self-harm.”

This is the latest incident of the social media giant handing out a swath of bans or suspensions of conservative accounts.

Shapiro came to the defense of his partner tweeting his disgust at the treatment of Boreing.

“This is legitimately the most insane Twitter suspension I have ever heard of. My business partner, @JeremyDBoreing, was just suspended for 12 hours for this tweet,” Shapiro said on his own Twitter account.

“Why?” he asked, “Because it was supposedly ‘promoting or encouraging self-harm.’ IT’S A JOKE ABOUT BRUSSELS SPROUTS. WTF @jack.”

Boreing’s suspension is over now and he has returned to the platform. To his credit he seemed to take the incident in stride tweeting:

“From Avalon-in-the-West, I have returned. Upon appeal, my joke about not eating leafy green vegetables was determined to be a joke about not eating leafy green vegetables. Thanks for the kindness, all. And thanks for the quick correction, @jack. Now, about that blue check mark …”

Vegetable Cartoon Characters Racist? – Brian Sussman

More madness from my state of California, this time originating at our state’s University in San Marcos.

At an event known as the Annual Whiteness Forum, the popular Christian children’s cartoon series, “VeggieTales,” has been labeled, “dangerous” for promoting racial stereotypes by making the villains colored.  That’s right, Bob the Tomato  and Larry the Cucumber, whose  tagline is, “Remember kids, God made you special and he loves you very much,” are promoting racism.

According to one of the posters presented at the forum, “Whiteness in the Bible isn’t just seen as ‘power’ it’s seen as ‘good.’  When kids see the good white character triumph over the bad person of color character they are taught that white is right and minorities are the source of evil.”

It should be noted that the Veggie Tales’ heroes, Bob the Tomato  and Larry the Cucumber, are red and green, respectively.

According to Fox News, the  female student who headed up the project reportedly said the evil characters sound ethnic or Latino, while the good characters sound white.

By humanizing vegetables, says the poster, the creators of VeggieTales are using children’s programming to promote racial stereotypes by making the villains racial minorities. “When supremacists aim to taint the way children think of people of color, it will work,” it reads.

PJ Media reached out to Eric Metaxas, a former Veggie Tales writer and narrator,  who offered this profound comment:

“All vegetables are part of one race, even though they are of many colors.  They are all descended from the same parents — the Adam and Eve of vegetables, who foolishly ate a forbidden fruit (irony?) and screwed everything up for all vegetables descended from them. At least I’m pretty sure that’s the story.”

The Bible teaches that all people — regardless of race — were created in God’s image, have sinned, and are in need of the saving grace of Jesus the Messiah.  This is the message of Veggie Tales.  I would know–my kids grew up on the series, Veggie Tales.  And the villains (and even some of the good guys) do often have silly accents, for purposes of humor.
