Nothing beats beets

Beetroot! Whether it’s a relish in a burger, the star ingredient of borscht or as a staple of vegetable juice, you can’t beat a beet for health. This chard-like root vegetable has a unique taste and is colloquially known as a ‘blood builder’. With the drastic changes in temperature, it is important to keep your residents’ immune systems as strong as possible. Beetroot could be the perfect ingredient to add into your Winter menus.

Benefits of beetroot

Apart from beetroot’s ability to increase white blood cell count, the reasonably high concentration of nitrates found in beetroot is thought to reduce the risk of heart failure and stroke by dilating blood vessels to decrease blood pressure. Betacyanin, the pigment that gives beetroot its distinctive, rich red colour, is thought to reduce the risk of developing some forms of cancer.

Other benefits of beets include a swag of vitamins and minerals, including calcium, iron and vitamin C, folic acid, fibre, manganese and potassium. Red beetroots have been ranked as one of the 10 most potent antioxidant vegetables and are also one of the richest sources of glutamine, an amino acid, essential to the health and maintenance of the intestinal tract.
